Max 500

The 15th International Golden Roof Challenge this year will focus on the celebration of „Max 500“ - the 500th anniversary of the death of Emperor Maximilian I. At the turn of the year in 1500, he erected the Golden Roof and equipped it with 2657 golden shingles. In front of its impressive backdrop, jousting tournaments were held.

In 2019, more than 100 events will take place throughout Europe in the context of this commemoration – with the International Golden Roof Challenge being the only sports event! This powerful Habsburg emperor, ruling at the very start of the Renaissance, was also referred to as "the Last Knight" and "the First European".

This year, our athletes, accompanied by a TV crew, will follow in the footsteps of the Emperor tracing Maximilian's passion for hunting and fishing into account, with special excursions on 7 June to the Innsbruck Alpine Zoo and on 8 June to Ambras Castle - the oldest museum in the world - with numerous unique relics, weapons and armour from the reign of Emperor Maximilian I.

Additionally, as part of the supporting program, the 50 finalists of the 10th EUREGIO School Championship will make an excursion to the "Black Mandern" church around the official tomb of Maximilian. 28 larger-than-life bronze statues of the noble family of Maximilian I. are grouped around the sarcophagus and form one of the most impressive imperial tombs in the world.

On the evening of the Golden Roof Challenge, the top pole vault athletes will then joust for the traditional "Kranzelstechen" – participating in the medieval tradition and following Maximilian’s lead - „Per tot discrimina rerum“ – “through so many dangers” engaging in enthralling duels and breath-taking jumps in the hunt for success.
